What we do:

Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign (NSC) works to address social and economic injustice in Nicaragua by channelling support to partner organisations and communities and building solidarity with them. At the moment we are supporting a literacy project in the Rio Coco, one of the poorest and most remote areas of Nicaragua's Caribbean Coast region. Using people’s homes and tiny community centres, voluntary literacy workers are helping adults of all ages learn to read and write in their own language, Miskitu. There are specially produced books, videos and video players which enable people to do much of the learning on their own. Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign is paying for the fuel for the generators; these power the teaching equipment and without the fuel very little can be achieved. It costs US$60 (about £40) to power one literacy point for 12-15 learners for a 3-month learning period.

Another major part of our work is educational: to disseminate information and raise awareness in the UK of the issues affecting Nicaragua. We carry this out through tours and delegations to Nicaragua, tours of Nicaraguan speakers here in the UK and campaigning activities. NSC is a small membership organisation with four part-time workers in London, two part-time in Managua and a network of affiliated individuals and groups in England, Scotland and Wales.
