Seafarers UK, formerly King George’s Fund for Sailors, is the leading charity for our maritime community, looking after people across the UK from the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines, the Merchant Navy and the fishing fleets, together with their families.
Every year over 100 fishermen are killed or seriously injured and at least two fishing boats are lost at sea every month. These terrible accidents lead to real hardship. Often, it is the breadwinner who is killed or badly injured leaving the family in desperate need of financial and emotional help. Funding grants to help these distressed families is just one of the many things Seafarers UK do to help Britain's maritime communities.
Seafarers UK also give grants to organisations that provide the following services: support for veterans from the Royal Navy and Merchant Navy; specialist sea training to provide more opportunities for young people; hostels and specialist services that provide practical help for unemployed and homeless seafarers; care for the children of seafarers who have fallen on hard times.
