H·E·A·R·T UK - The Cholesterol Charity - is passionate about preventing premature deaths caused by inherited high cholesterol (IHC) and heart disease. One person in every 100 is affected by IHC which causes early cardiovascular disease and can kill fit young people in their 20s, 30s and 40s, suddenly and without warning. Currently only about 15% of cases of IHC are identified in time, leaving around 500,000 people undiagnosed and at risk of early death.
The Charity supports those families already diagnosed, raises public awareness about the condition, lobbies for better detection of those at risk and funds research into improved treatments. H·E·A·R·T UK's redlaces, which represent a healthy cardiovascular system, have been designed to encourage everyone to lace-up and get active, and to prompt people to examine their family heart history and recognise when they might be at risk from IHC.
H·E·A·R·T UK was one of the two Official Charities in the Flora London Marathon 2008 and our runners - Teamredlaces – were committed to raising both awareness and funds to keep young hearts running.
If you would like to be part of Teamredlaces for the Flora London Marathon 2009, we would love to hear from you.
